How to Configure Linksys Wireless Router

Linksys is a product of CISCO the leading company named for Network Products. One of the most reliable and cheapest SOHO router with high performance. Linksys router normally comes with the following feature.

Configuration Part I
configuring Linksys Wireless router for cable connection:
Configuring Linksys router for cable connection is a very easy job than for any other type of connection.
Steps to be followed.
1)Check the internet connection:
Connect the computer to the modem and check if you are able to get online.If you are cable to get online then click on StartMenu-->Run-->type "CMD"(Click OK). Command prompt will appear then type "ipconfig" and find the ip address. For example the display will be like the one below.

To confirm if you are online execute the following command.

If you are getting four replies then you are online else you have to get in touch with your service provider to get it fixed.
2)Configuring the Router:
a)Connect the computer to any one of the Lan Port in the router.
b)Check if you are getting a light in the port to which it is connected.
c)connect a cable from your modem to the wan Port of the router.
d)Check if you are getting light in the wan port also.
e)Now the ip address as same as before this time you should get the ip address as below.

f)Open an Internet explorer and in the address bar type http://192.168.1.1 and then hit enter
g)It will prompt for an username an password. After typing in the username(admin) and password(admin).Click the "OK".
i)You will be into a blue Setup page called Linksys Setup page.
j)In the setup page you will see a configuration type drop down box.
k)From the drop down select "Automatic Configuration DHCP" and click "SaveSettings" button.You will get a popu up with a message"Settings are successful please click continue". You have to click "continue". After few seconds you will be back to the setup page.
l) Click on Mac-Address-clone buttion. In the new screen you will see a Radio button with two options enable and disable. Select enable option and then click on "Clone Your Mac-Address Clone" button. Click on "SaveSettings" button to save your changes.
m)Once your back into the Original Page. Go to "Status" page then look for an Internet Ip address which should have some value other than 0.0.0.0.
If you got an ip address then you are good to go then check if you are online. You should be online.
Basic Wireless Configuration:
Once you are online then the second part of configuration is wireless configuration.
To configure the wireless portion of a wireless router
Click on "Wireless Tab"
1)Under Wireless tab you will have "Basic Wireless Settings","Wireless Security","Wireless Mac Filter" and "Advanced Wireless Settings".
2)Basic wireless configuration require Basic Wireless Settings and Wireless Security Tab. Under Basic Wireless Settings you will have many option to tune your wireless capability.
- Wireless Network Mode
- Wireless Network Name(SSID)
- Wireless Channel
- Wireless SSID Broadcast
- Wireless Network Mode:
There are four option that you can select.
- Disabled
- B-Only
- G-Only
- Mixed
The best and the default option is "Mixed".
2. Wireless Network Name(SSID):
This can be anything of your choice(ex:myhome,jackhome etc). Whenever you search for any wireless signal in your laptop or computer you will see this name.
3. Wireless Channel:
There are 11 different channels that you can choose. Out of 11 there are three better channels that you can use 1,6 and 11. Because this three channels are non overlapping channels. This three channel will have less interference.The default option is 6
4. Wireless SSID Broadcast:
There are two options available they are enable and disable. For basic wireless router configuration it is recommended to be in enable. the default option is also enable
Click "Save Settings" to save the changes.
Wireless Security
This feature allows you to enable security for your wireless signal. There are 4 basic security that can be used without any additional resources.They are
- Disabled
- Wep
- WPA personal
- WPA2 Personal
Apart from this there are some other option that requires a radius server they are
- RADIUS
- WPA EnterPrise
- WPA2 Enterprise
Select any of the security option. If wep is selected then you will be prompted to type a passphrase and then you will have a generate button click on that then it will display four ten digit keys. Make a note of that ten digit number.So that whenever you connect with your signal you can use this ten digit number to authenticate the signal.
WPA:
If your option is WPA then you will have an option to type a passphrase(minimum 8 character).The same eight digit key will be your password. Use the password to connect with your signal from your laptop/computer.
WPA2 Personal
It is same as WPA personal but the difference is compare to WPA personal this have a stronger encryption algorithm.
Configuring Linksys Router for DSL Connection
Setting up Linksys router for DSL connection is a bit tricky job. Please follow the below procedure.
First we need to confirm if the internet connection is a DSL connection.
Connect the computer to the modem and check if you are able to get online.If you are cable to get online then click on StartMenu-->Run-->type "CMD"(Click OK). Command prompt will appear then type "ipconfig" and find the ip address. For example the display will be like the one below.

If you are getting an IP Address like other than 192.x.x.x, 172.x.x.x, 10.x.x.x under PPP adapter then your ISP is providing DSL service in bridge mode.
We need to follow the same steps as we did for Cable connection at the top of the hub page execept one specific change. We need to change the internet connection type to PPPOE. Then type in the UserName and Password. Click "Save Settings" to save the changes.
Check the IP Address on the status page, you should see an IP address.
Configure Linksys Router for DSL connection with NAT mode.
Setting up Linksys Router for DSL connection with NAT mode is pretty easy and straight forward.
First we need to confirm if the internet connection is a DSL with NAT mode. Please follow the below instruction.
Connect the computer to the modem and check if you are able to get online.If you are cable to get online then click on StartMenu-->Run-->type "CMD"(Click OK). Command prompt will appear then type "ipconfig" and find the ip address. For example the display will be like the one below.

We need to change the local IP address to 192.168.2.1 Check the IP Address on the status page, you should see an IP address.
Frequently Asked Questions:
A)How should I find what type of connection is mine?
1)Under Direct connection find the Ip address using the step 1. If you are finding an ip address under ethernet adapter local area connection other than 0.0.0.0,169.254.x.x or 192.168.x.x (ex:72.x.x.x,123.x.x.x) then you are connection is cable.
2)If you are having an Ip address under PPPoE adapter then it is a DSL connection in Bridge Mode.
3)If you are having an Ip address like 192.168.1.x,192.168.2.x,10.x.x.x,172.161.x.x then it is also a DSL connection in NAT mode.
B)I am getting an ip address in Status page but still I am not online.
1)Turn off the power to the router then to the modem. wait for approximately 30Secs.
2)Turn on the power to the modem first and wait for the modem to settle(ie wait for all the lights to lit up except the data light.)
3)Turn on the power to the router then wait for the power light to get solid. Once it is solid then you will get a Data light in the modem.
4)Check if you are online, you should be online.
C)Still I am not online after trying power cycle.
1) In the command prompt type ping 4.2.2.1 and check if you are getting four replies

If you are getting four replies then try to ping yahoo.com then you will get the following response.
PING RESPONSE COULD NOT FIND HOST
This shows issue with a DNS server. How to configure a DNS server to resolve this issue.
Start==>Search-->Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections-->Right Click on LocalAreaConnection--->(Click)on properties-->Click on Network Tab-->HighLight TCP/IP IPv4-->Click on properties-->Select "Use the following DNS server address"-->then type the primary and secondary DNS Server address.
Primary-->4.2.2.1
Secondary-->4.2.2.2
Then click ok.
Try to ping yahoo.com check if you are getting 4 replies then you will definitely online.
4)I am not able to ping 4.2.2.1
While pinging 4.2.2.1 if you are getting Request Timed Out then try restarting the computer. If it doesn't work then try disabling you antivirus then try to ping 4.2.2.1 you should get 4 replies.
5)I am getting Media Disconnected message when I try to find an Ip Address using step 1.
This is because the cable is not connected properly between the router and the computer. To check that you can check for the light on the port to which the computer is connected.If it is not glowing then secure the cable properly into the port.

To answer your query, if you default username and password(admin) is not working then you can reset your router to its default username and password by pressing the reset button on the rear side of the router for 30secs. Then power off your router and power it on. Now try to login to the router with default usernam and password(admin), it will work.

Also, I hope that wasn't your real IP address that you included up there with your ping information, as that would make hackers able to get to your network, log in ot he router and do all manner of bad things!
Couple of crevats:
WPA/WPA2 Passkey.. I certianly would not use a phrase like "MyRouter" as it would be hacked within 5 mins using some simple hack tools. I would use a 64 or 63 character random hexadecimal/Ascii password. There is a handy generator here: https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm
Also if your Linksys router is a WRT54G/S/L and the version numbers allow it (check the bottom) I would put the tomato firmware on it instead of the crappy Linksys one. It has way more features and IMO is easier to use. http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
Also while talking about firmware, if you want a more advanced one that will do stuff that a more expensive router will do (IPv6, and a whole host of other stuff) get DDT-wrt

Eventhough I have reset the modem for 30 sec, I still can't load the page for router configuration. Can you please let me know if the problem might be connected with disabling "Wireless Network connection" ? Do I need to disable it on order to access the linksys page? Another question is : I want to change the settings of the router a secind time, because the sales person guaranteed wireless connection in a 3 floor house, but after I have configured the router I only have connection to the network on the 1st floor of the house..On the third floor I can see the network but hadrly connect to it..Can you please advise what can I do about settings or maybe other ways of configuring the router ?

Thank you so much for visting my hub. There are few possibilites because of which you may not able to able to access your setup page.
1)The ip address used to access the setup page.(default is 192.168.1.1).
But it can be changed to different one.So make sure you are using the right one. Find the ip address as advised in the hub. Default gateway is the ip address of the router.
2) Browser issue.
Clear the browser temporary files. Open IE hit "ALT+T" which will open Tools menu in your Internet Explorer(IE).Click "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files".
3) Firmware Issue.
Firmware is a software for your router to work. If firmware goes bad then you will not able to access the router page.You need to upgarde the firmware using TFTP server. Goto Linksys website download TFTP server software and the firmware for the router(Make sure you are downloading for the right version Ex:WRT54G V5). Once it is downloaded run the TFTP server software. It will prompt for server Ip address, username & password. Fill server IP:192.168.1.1, Username:admin Password:admin(all the values mentioned here are defult).There will be an option to select the file. Click the buttion and select the firmware to upgraded" then click upgrade. Once it is upgraded. Reset the router for 1 minute.Power down and power on the router. Then try to access the page.

Great info Karth. I'm trying to get my wife's business set up but I have a minor problem. The linksys wireless B configuration is as follows: PC (wife's) wired to router, router wired to internet. 2 wiireless PCs 'connected' to the linksys network. Both of the wirelss PCs can see the network, the internet and my wife's PC. However, my wife's PC cannot see the two wireless PCs. What setting am I missing?

Apparently, this hub is needed by those who have Linksys routers. I have a friend (an experienced electrical engineer and software designer) who had one and just gave up on it. He said he packed it back up in a box and just got another router.

I am very sorry for the dely in replying.. To check if two PCs are in same network, follow the steps below.
1) Find the Ip address of the your wife's PC
2) Goto the wireless computer find the ip address of it.
3) From your wife PC try to ping the Wireless Computer IP.(See the response).
4) From the wireless PC try to ping your wife PC's IP(See the response).
Responses may be the following.
1) Request Timed Out:It means the firewall is blocking the traffic between the PCS.Disable the firewall and try it out.
2) Destination net unreachable.It means the wireless computer is not connected to your wireless router but to someother router.
3) Success:It means both computer are perfectly in a same network.

Last one month ago we purchase a linkesys router we want to configure with my local network we have 30 computers and 4 notebooks. We want to configure with only notebooks what can we do.
We have a domain server and gateway server. Our internet is base on ISA 2006 with gateway server and our IP scheme 172.16.0.1 to 172.16.0.254 in which 172.16.0.1 IP of gateway machine, 172.16.0.2 for domain server and other all IP for client machine.
The problem is this router IP is 192.168.1.1 and IP scheme is 172.16.0.1.
I can change the IP of router but this working is hope less for example 172.16.0.100 of our router IP address (I can change it ) the notebook is shows linksys is connected but internet is not working.
What can we do please help me out I shell be very thankful to u. I am waiting your earlier reply.

I type in admin and admin for the username and password but it says "401 Unauthorized, Authorization required. I get no blue Setup page called Linksys Setup page.

I'm trying to add a client computer to my company linksys router network. In the router setup menu, I see a table with 20 MAC addresses listed. Do I add my MAC to that list? It appears that the prohibit:option above it is selected, not the "allow." Or, do I enter my MAC on the further submenu/page which provides a table of active clients and asks if I wish to turn on MAC filtering for them. Finally, do I need to enter my client computer's IP somewhere in setup, or will the router assign an IP automatically once it recognizes my MAC address in the proper list? Thanks.

It seems that Mac-Filter option is enabled and is configured in such a way not to allow the computers with mac-address listed to access the internet.So there is no need to enter your PC mac-address in the list.

To answer you first question.
In your browser try opening the page http://192.168.1.1/language.htm then try selecting the language you prefer. It may ask for a language pack.Insert your setup CD and in the CD look for the folder Language and select the appropriate language pack.
(ii)How to block certain website.
Answer:Goto http://192.168.1.1 Enter your username and password. When you are in the setup page.Click on the tab called "Access Restrictions".In that page you will have options to block the websites by URL and Keywords.

Apparently you are doing an excellent job here helping people out. So I was wondering if you could help me with the following issue, which I also posted over at the Linksys Forum (http://twurl.nl/dsfziq):
I have a WRT160N router + WUSB300N adapter installed on my desktop computer. Problem is that my internet connection drops continuously. Eventhough I have a perfect wireless connection with the router. And even when I hookup my pc directly to the router with a LAN-cable.
The only thing that works is restoring the connection through the Linksys EasyLink Advisor. Only to drop again after 15 minutes or so.
I have reinstalled the router & adapter a dozen of times, literally... (using the Linksys setup wizard)
I turned of Norton entirelly for a while... (just to make sure it didn't have anything to do with the firewall)
I get a Network Timeout when I try to acess http://192.168.1.1
So I'm totally out of ideas. Sometimes I experience similar difficulties with other devices (eg my laptop) that I connect wirelessly to the router. But less frequently & that can be solved by disconnecting & connecting again.

Thanks for visiting my hub. To isolate this issue, you need to find if the communication is breaking between your router and computer or router and the internet. To find the same please do the following.
Click Start-->Run-->Type command and hit enter. You will get a command prompt. In that black window type.
ping 192.168.1.1 -t
then hit enter. You will get replies leave the black window minimized.
Now again open one more black window repeating the same(Start->run->command )
This time type ping 4.2.2.1 -t
Leave this window also minimized. Whenever you see disconnect, check the black windows. If you see "Request Timeout" from 192.168.1.1 then the communication is not happening between your router and computer. If you see "Request Timeout" from 4.2.2.1 then the commnucation is not happening between your router and internet.
1) If you have problem between the computer and router then try doing the same on the other computer. If the problem persist on the other computer also then it is a problem with your router you can try upgrading the firmware of the router. If the problem is only with a specific computer then try reinstalling the wireless adapter again.
2) If you have communication problem between the router and the internet then it is the problem with either your internet provider or router. To isolate this you need to connect the computer directly to the modem and try executing the ping as advised above. If the problem persists here as well then it is the problem with the modem else it is the problem with the router. Try upgrading the firmware of the router if you find the issue to be with the router.

I've established that it must have been a problem with the router. Th first thing I did was power cycling as explained on the Linksys support site to set the router back to it's default settings. Then I manually configured the router and reinstalled the wireless adapter.
I haven't upgraded the firmware yet, as the connection seems stable for now and I'm not really sure how to do this. I have also hooked up my laptop and iPhone (but not simultaniously) and for the moment I also haven't experienced any problems there.
Just going to perform some further testing by connecting more devices at the same time, hoping I won't get back from where I started. :)

Thanks a lot for such a informative guide. Plz solve my problem. We have a LAN and WLAN. The LAN is made up of FOUR -8 port switches and the WLAN is connected to the linksys AP.
All the switches and the linksys AP is connected to a central switch. The central switch in turn is connected to the modem. There are only 20 pc's. However pc connected to the linksys AP are not able to ping each other or access the other LAN computers. However they are able to access the INTERNET. Also i have given static ip on all the PC. IP Address range of PC1(LAN) and PC2(WLAN) should be in the same range.
Ex: 192.168.1.x
Ping the Ip address of the PC1 from PC2
Ex::PC1:192.168.1.101
PC2:192.168.1.102
From PC2
Start-->Run-->Cmd-->Ping 192.168.1.101
If you are able to ping then there should not be any problem in communication between the WLAN and LAN.
If the IP range is different
Ex:192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x then probably one of the computer on their WLAN or LAN is enabled with DHCP. You need to disable the DHCP.

Error message you are referring will be the result of cable problem. To quick identifity that.
Click start-->Run-->CMD click ok.
In the black window, type IPCONFIG. If you get Media-state media disconnected then you need to safely secure your cable into any of the LAN port(1,2,3 or 4). Make sure the cable from the computer should be connected to Lan port and not the Wan port. If you are sure the cables are connected properly then you need to try changing the cable.
Let me know the result after your trial.
You can skip running the disk and follow the entire procedure described in this hub which doesn't require disk to configure your router.

I was having issues of my wireless router (linksys WRT54G2 V1) getting disconnected often. I tried login into http://192.168.1.1 it failed. So I did 'Reset' on the router. I was able to login in with 'admin' password.
But post that I am not able to access internet. I am not sure what connection went wrong.
I do an IPCONFIG @ cmd I do see the entries filled up.
But I am not able to ping any site.
I ran through the page and checked for the settings you mentioned above.
But the router even on LAN connection is not working now :(..all lights are showing up proper.

I had tried to upgrade my firmware. Current version 1.0 , I tried applying WRT54GV4.0_4.21.1_US_code.bin. But it failed. Not sure if the issue is because the firmware is corrupted ?

Hi Hari,
Although you see some entries on your IP address output, is it something like 192.168.X.X.?
If you see 192.168.1.10X address then try pinging your router's IP(192.168.1.1) @ CMD. If see reply then you have communication with the router.
Follow the below steps if you see reply.
1) Download the tftp client http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/Tftp Run the file
Then in the server type 192.168.1.1 and password as admin(default). Then click on the three dotted button and choose the file to upgrade(Make sure you downloaded the right firmware for the router). Click on upgrade. Wait patiently!! it will take several minutes to complete the upgrade.(Wait for the message that says upgradation completed.
2) After upgrade it is always advisable to reset the router once the upgrade is completed.
3) Try accessing the router page it should work
Follow the below steps if you do not see reply.
1) We need to do "Funny Reset". To do that you need to press the hard reset button with your pen for 1 minute. While pressing the reset button you need to unplug the power cord from the router at the 15 secs. After another 15 secs replug the power cord to the router. Do this twice while holding the reset button.
2) Now check the IP address it should work.

I'm having trouble with my wrt54g Wireless router...For some reason I keep losing internet connection every hour or so, for about 5 minutes before I'm back online. But it only happens to my two wireless toshiba laptops and not my desktop which the router is directly connected to the desktop.
I have updated my firmware, but that didn't help, I've also tried changing channels, but that was pointless too, so now I'm stuck, what should I do? is it the modem or the router the problem?....Thanks
How far is the laptop from the router? If the laptop is too far from the router then try bringing close to the router and check. If any equipment like Microwave, cordless phone which produces electro magnetic rays in your home then keep those devices away from the router or laptop.
My laptop is always in the same room as my router and modem. I only have a cordless phone in the room thats in the opposite side of the router and modem. When the service goes out, even though the signal shows Excellent, but the little balloon disappears, I diagnose the problem and it always says Cannot communicate with one of the two DNS.

Since the diagnosis says "Cannot communicate with one of the two DNS", only possible option is to manually enter the DNS value in your laptop. Follow the below procedure.
1) Click on start-->control panel-->Double Click on "Network Connections"-->Right click on "Wireless Network connection"-->Click on properties-->Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"-->Click on "properties"-->Select "Use the following DNS server addresses:"
In the preferred DNS server: type in 4.2.2.1
In the Alternate DNS server: type in 4.2.2.2
Click OK
I believe this should solve the problem.

im having difficulty setting up my wrt54g router. i've tried almost all config and set up guide i've googled and only onething works and it doesnt allow to set up wireless security. here's the step:
1) Connect your laptop/PC to the linksys router via RJ45 cable.
2) Go to the router’s admin page via 192.168.1.1 and change the default IP to 192.168.1.2 (this is assuming that your Aztech modem’s gateway is 192.168.1.1 which is usually the case…).
3) Make sure that the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and then disable DHCP. Save the settings.
4) Connect the modem to the router via one of the LAN ports and not thru the WAN port(internet port). This is important. This makes the modem and the router bridged and they are now in 1 subnet.
5) Reboot everything from PC to router to modem. The wireless router should now be connected to the modem.
this guide worked but like i said it doesnt allow me to set my wireless security.
when i do the basic set up, all pc's on the network can't access gthe internet. either it be via wifi or lined.

I understand the problem clearly. Here the problem is your modem and router are have same IP address range(that shouldn't be the case).
Follow the below steps to make it work.
1) Disconnect the cable between the router and the modem.
2) Connect the laptop/computer to one of the LAN(Numbered port) of the router.
3) Login to setup page of router by opening your browser and in the address bar type in 192.168.1.1and hit enter.
(Default username:admin password:admin)
2) Now scroll down the setup page.
Change the local IP address to 192.168.2.1 and click on save settings.
3) Now login to your setup page with new IP address 192.168.2.1 and proceed with the configuration specified above in my hub pages.
Definitely it should work.

I am very glad that my hub helped you. Regarding your question. By default the legacy linksys router comes with a cisco security button on it. If it is pressed then WAP personal is enabled by default. But it is always possible to change the security to WEP. Make sure to do save settings to enable the same.

I saw your online help regarding Linksys routers and decided to see if you could help me out..... I have a Linksys BEFSR41 and I have 2 PC's hard cabled to it. Everything is good up until the modem and I can even plug my modem into either PC and it works but when I add the Linksys in the mix nothing works. I assume that either something is wrong with the configureation (I didn't think that anything needed to be configured) or something is wrong with the device itself. I have also rebooted and reset everything and nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

This issue will happen only if there is any conflict between the IP Address that you receive from your modem and the IP address that you receive from your router or if router is not configured properly.
To check that please connect the computer to the modem directly and check the IP address.
Connect the computer to the router directly and check the IP address.
If they are same then change the IP address of your router it will resolve the problem.
If they are not same then surely it is configuration issue.
1) If your internet connection is cable then dont forget to do Mac Clone.
2) If your internet connection is DSL then make sure you type in the right username and password.

> Make sure the computer/laptop connected on one of the lan ports(numbered port) and not wan port.

Although there are four keys available. By default the "Default transmit key" will be selected as "key 1" hence you have to use Key 1's value. If you change the default transmit key value to 2 then use the Key 2 value.

I've tried everything to releive this problem but still have had no luck. I've had an (Unsecure) home network where my laptop, PS3, Surround Sound had been working for the past few years. Last night I decided to add a password to my network. Long story short, I had to reset my Linksys WRT54GS router by holding the reset button for 30 seconds. Now all the factory settings are in place. I’ve done everything properly as far as logging into the setup page, adjusting the network names, adding WEP passcodes. When I try and access the network from the Laptop (Dell) I see the network and am able to connect just fine. The issue I'm having is when the network tries to connect to the internet through a high-speed cable box/with phone capabilities (Comcast) all it does is search and search and comes up with the response of "not being able to acquire IP address" Then it allows me to have "limited" internet access. I am still unable to go to any www. site. My whole goal is to have the network back like normal, (PS3 and WIFI phones/home surround systems) able to connect but still have a secured network. Please if you could help me out in any way it would be much appreciated. I will be more then happy to give you any more information you would need to make an educated decision on why I am having this issue, as well. Thank you in advance.

I believe the problem is with the configuration part of your router. Follow the below procedure the issue should be resolved.
1) Login to the setup page
> click on Mac-address clone tab
> click on the button "clone my mac-address"
> Click save settings and continue if prompted
2) Click on status tab and check if you have got an Internet IP address. If you have got an internet IP address then your problem should be resolved.

I want to make a wireless controlled robot. So I will place the linksys wireless router on the mobile robot. Is there an output (say a serial port) on the router where from it can communicate with the outside world (say a microcontroller).
So can it happen that I wirelessly connect my laptop to the router and wire the router to a microcontroller. Now I send "ABC" from laptop to router and it sends the same to the microcontroller. Then , the microcontroller sends "XYZ" to the router and it communicates it back to the laptop.

I figured out the problem. The reason for your PC getting the public IP Address(i.e 66.xx.xx.xx) is cable from the modem or ISP is connected to one of the LAN port and the Wan port. Make sure to connect the cable from ISP to the isolated WAN Port and not the numbered LAN port.
If you have got the connections correct then please reset the router once and reconfigure it because the DHCP pool IP Address might have been changed during the initial configuration.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I reconfigured it using your prompts. Its not related to configuration part. However, I would like to answer your question. Every router has got "IP Protocol" enabled. IP protcol is capable of identifying the routes learned on their "connected" interfaces. In your case there are two interfaces (Lan)--192.168.1.1/24 and Wan--192.168.0.1/24. So now the router knows the route to 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.0.0/24 and the communication happens without any issues.

Hi Tom,
Your request can be easily acheived by a simple configuration change on the linksys router. Access the setup page of linksys then go to Access Restrictions tab. Click on Internet Access subtab. You will find Internet Access Policy, right below that you need to check the "Enable" Radio button.
1) Type in your own policy name
2) Click on "Edit List of PCs" button
3) Type in the IP address or Mac-Address of the PCs which you want to block on specific duration.
4) Check the "Deny" radio button.
5) Check the "Everyday" check box.
6) Now select the time window.
7) Click on Save Settings.

This may be due to an issue with the IP address conflict. The router goes to hung state if it detects an host using an IP address which is already in use. Before your friend connects his laptop to your network, please make sure that no static IP address is configured on his laptop.

sir gud day. I would like to ask if there is a conflict between Dlink AirPlus G DWL-G510 wireless LanCard and WRT120N Wireless N LinkSys Router. Whenever I turned on my computer with attached the said LANCARD while the router is on, the computer will not continue to load on its desktop instead it will restart momentarily. I have noticed that when my router is turned off, the computer with the attached DWL-G510 Wireless LanCard will start-up normally.. The distance between the router and the computer is about 1 meter. There should not be any conflict between them. However, please disable the line card from the device manager in the computer and reboot the system. After rebooting try enabling the card and check the status.

Thank you for your immediate response I appreciate it. I have done what you've suggested by still it doesn't work for me. However, I've done different thing. I've found out that mode of Wireless N router is Mixed, so then maybe it is possible that it transmit an N or B signal to an area . On the other hand, my wireless LanCard (AirPlus G DWL-510) is on G-mode so maybe that causes the PC to crash. I change my Router's settings to G-Mode only and it work fine so far. Let me the IP Address that you are getting on the status page to troubleshoot further.
If you are getting 192.168.1.x ip address in the status page then your internet will not work. Possbile reasons below.
1) IP address that your service provider provides you is in the same range of your router IP. Need to change the router IP to 192.168.2.1
2) If the IP address is not 192.168.1.x then possibly a DNS issue.
1) In the command prompt type ping 4.2.2.1 and check if you are getting four replies

This shows issue with a DNS server. How to configure a DNS server to resolve this issue.
Start==>Search-->Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections-->Right Click on LocalAreaConnection--->(Click)on properties-->Click on Network Tab-->HighLight TCP/IP IPv4-->Click on properties-->Select "Use the following DNS server address"-->then type the primary and secondary DNS Server address.

In your configuration I saw a non recommended step. It about connecting devices before configuring the router. You say connect your computer to the LAN port and modem to the WAN port and then start configure the router.
It is OK but not highly recommended to connect modem to the router at the time of configuration where you are using DSL connection. (Here you provide steps to configure cable modem so it is fine). Anyway it is a nice hub with lot of replies congrats.

They have instructions on their website www.camfrog.com that tell how to enable a router to allow camfrog to work but nothing to tell me how to block their application. (You can open the following ports to make Camfrog Server work behind a firewall/NAT.

Opened ports are not needed, but disable Norton Firewall because it can cause conflicts.
Portforward.com is a great resource site for help with port forwarding with your router. You may need to forward ports to get Camfrog server to work behind your router. )

Please make sure in the username and password in the router setup page is correct.
Username should be like xxx@abc.com don't simply type xxx.
Check if you are online without router incase if it is not working then contact your service provider.

Each step is followed, but the problem is that when I connect my computer to the router (and the router to the modem), and then do an ipconfig, the IP stays the same as when I connect the computer to the modem directly. I've tried reseting the modem, rebooting the computer.

I've tried your suggestions as below from an earlier post and nothing happens - the listed computer is still able to access the internet. I've seen the same suggestions in other discussions and seen other people say they don't work for them either. Any idea why? I'm following all steps as listed:

What is the exact error message you are getting? If it is 401 error message then it is definitely a problem with the authentication credentials. U might have changed the password during setup process in such case if you dont remember that password then you need to reset the router and reconfigure it again.

Have you checked the IP address? Incase if you are getting the IP address and you are able to ping yahoo.com then its a problem with the browser. If you are getting the IP address but you are getting "Request Timed Out" when pinging yahoo.com then its a problem with the firewall. Please try disabling the firewall it should work.

Hi. I have router wrt54gs and I just moved into a new home with AT&T internet... I changed my IP address in order to connect and internet works fine on the desktop. However I'm having issues with the wireless. Wireless devices can find the SSID and for a while I was able to connect fine unsecured, but I was never able to connect after setting up my security. I tried both WPA and WEP and no device will connect wirelessly. Now it seems like I can't connect unsecured anymore as well. All devices say "obtaining address", but won't connect. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!
I believe Mac-Filter is enabled on the router. Please disable the Mac-Filter and try re-connecting it should work.

How to assign static IP address for a machine.
Go to Control Panel --> Double Click the "Network Connection" --> Right Click the "Wireless Network Connection" then select "Properties".
Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "Properties". Select "Use the following IP Address" then Type in the below the details
IP Address: 192.168.1.155
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:192.168.1.1
Primary DNS Server: 4.2.2.1
Secondary DNS Server: 4.2.2.2
It should work.

The issue seems to be with the wireless adapter in the HP laptop. Try upgrading the driver for the adapter.
Click on start --> Run --> type in "devmgmt.msc" and click Ok.
Search for "Network Adapter" click on "+" sign. Double click on the Wireless adapter goto Driver tab. Click on update driver. It should work.

Perfect!! I am glad that it worked for one computer. Error message mentioned could appear if your laptop or wireless card doesn't support the security option in your router. Try changing the security type to WPA or WEP and check it should work. If you do not wish to change the security option then you need to upgrade the drivers for your wireless card in the laptop.

Can you confirm wat is the IP Address you see there?
If it is 169.254.x.x with no default gateway then your laptop is not getting an IP address from the router.This could be possibly because it might be problem with the router or adapter in your PC.
If it is media disconnected then it could be cable issue.

I belive your ISP modem IP and router IP are same(192.168.1.1). Try changing the password of your router to 192.168.2.1.

Check the IP address in the status page of the router. If the IP address is 192.168.1.3 then the configuration is perfect. If you are still not able to get online then it could be related to DNS issue. Try pinging 4.2.2.1 if you are getting reply then its an issue with the DNS. You need to assign static DNS in your laptop.

There is no legal option of converting a router into wireless access point or range expander or wifi extender. But you can disable DHCP in the router to act as a wireless switch. You need to get a cable running from the WAG to this router to setup this network.
I originally set up my Linksys wifi router gateway on my Sony Vaio. I had to send in the Vaio for maintenance and the harddrive was wiped. Now I have it back and although it can see my network (other laptops are using it)and those around us it will not connect (it will connect to others). How can I rectify this?

If you are using Wire Zero Configuration (Inbuilt Xp Wireless Client) or other wireless client to connect to the wireless router then you need to delete the existing network from your laptop/PC from preferred network. The better option is to change the SSID while changing the network key or password. After changing the network ID, try connecting to the network with your password it should work.

I set up a linksys e2000 at my wife's office because they didnt have wireless. The network has a cable modem, a firewall hardware device which then connects to two 20 port switches. I added the Linksys wireless router into a vacant slot on one of the switches.
The office lan is 172.31.148.x with a default gateway of 255.255.255.224. I configured the wireless router to 172.31.1.1. PC's connected wirelessly (172.31.1.x) can ping pc's hard wired (172.31.148.x), but not the other way.
I think it might be the wireless routers firewall. If I turn this off, will the hard wired pc's be able to connect to the wireless ones? Or will it open the whole network to internet traffic? I would hope the checkpoint firewall box would prevent exposing the LAN, but if the wireless had an internet connection, wasnt sure if that backdoor'd the whole thing.

Please setup the network as above and you should be able to vie-versa. Disabling the firewall will not affect the LAN as their NATTED.

I have a Linksys WAG200G connected to my ISP, with two wireless laptops and a PC connected to it. Also connected to it by wire and in bridge mode is a Netcomm NB5Plus4 with a desktop PC and a networked printer attached to that. All are using the same IP address range, all can connect to the internet, all can ping each other as well print to the printer. I have set up an ftp server on the desktop PC but I can't get any of the laptops to connect to the ftp server although the desktop PC can connect to its own ftp server. I'm guessing the traffic between the two routers is being filtered for port 20/21 but I can't see where. Can you help?

If you are confidient that the configuration is correct. Try testing if the router is working. Please follow the below procedure to test.
Login to the setup page.
Take a cable, connect the one of the lan port to wan port of the router and check the IP address in the status page. If you are getting the IP address as 192.168.1.x then the router is working fine it should be something to do with the configuration or firmware of the router. If you are not getting the IP address then try resetting the router and repeat the task. If no luck again then its an issue with the router.

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH.. I have comcast high speed internet and I didnt realize when i bought the plan that the modem wasnt wireless accessable (only one port to connect to). I called comcast Tech support because 1) they owe me free assistance for messin up and installing my modem the first time incorrectly. I called them, the answer they gave me was " look it up on youtube or google" haha i couldnt believe it. then i said ok ill google it, i came across 10 different ways to set this up and this one by far was the best. Connect a cable between a LAN port and computer.
Login to the router setup page.
Connect a cable between a LAN port and Wan port of the router.
Check the status page, u should get an Ip address(192.168.1.x).
If you get an IP address then its not an issue with the router else do hard reset for 1 minute and follow the instruction once again.

If you are able to ping yahoo.com without any packet loss then your internet is working. Then its the issue with browser. But you said that u have tried two browsers and the result is same on both the browsers.
Tried to restore default settings in IE and clear the temp files and clear the cookies. Even after that if the issue is not resolved then try connecting the computer to modem bypassing the router and check the status. Even after that if the issue is not resolved then try reinstalling the browser.

I have a problem with my WAG354G and I hope you may be able to help.
I have had the router for approx 7 years.
Last night the connection was fine.
Today, although I can connect through the ethernet cable I cannot connect to my wireless network, either through the laptop or other devices, i.e ipod touch,xbox360. I can see my network in the list of available networks but it tries to connect for a long time then stops and then my wireless network disappears from the list.
All lights that are usually on the router are all working fine. No problems with my internet provider as eveything is fine when connected by cable. I have tried a hard reset and done a set up from factory settings again. Cant think of anything it else to do.
Is it time for a new router, is there any way of fixing it?

I believe its an issue with the router firmware. Before U buy a new router. Try upgrading the firmware of the router and reconfigure it. If it is still not working then it should be a hardware issue.

i just came across your page is pretty helpful...any way i have got a problem for connection though my linksys wrt54g2 v1 .... Before i was using 1 mb line its i think adsl so it was working fine and then i upgraded to 2mb line and also there is a power problem at my side...so i got reset or something i tried hard to reconfigure it but everytime i do i cant access internet the network is okay....now i dont know wt could be the problem....
I am using ppoe and username passwrd.....also i configure security key. may be there is a problem in basic wireless setup...can u suggest some help?

Connect a laptop to any of the lan ports of the router and ping 192.168.1.1.
If it is not pinging
Try disabling your anti-virus/firewall.
Try to reset the router.

Hi Ali,
Assigning an IP address on your computer will only help u to connect to your router but not to the internet. To get online, the settings should be provided by the provider.
1) Cable Connection -->Need Mac-Clone in your router
2) PPP Connection --> Need to configure the Username and Password in the router
3) Static connection --> Need to assign a static IP address in the router.

HI Umer,
If admin didn't work then you might have configured an username and password during your initial installation. Only way to get into the router is to recall the credentials or to reset the router and start the installation from scratch.

Please make sure you are getting an IP address in the status page of your router.If not then either the username/password you configured on your router for PPOE connection is incorrect or the connection is not a PPPOE connection.

Infact i got some screenshots to explain more what is the problem. BTW somehow i was reading on internet that sometime there is a modem or router in ISP and reseting that can solve the problem. if you can have a look at those images. there are two types of screenshots . One when i connected to modem directly and acess modem page . Second when i connected to linksys and access router page and got screenshots.

From the screenshots it is very evident that your modem acts as a router and modem. To fix the issue, u need to change the IP address of the Linksys router to 192.168.2.1 then select configuration type as "Automatic Configuration" in the setup page.
This will fix the issue.

Thanks alot for your help but it did not work....
well i should have told you that i have a modem from isp which is connected to linksys router. now as these days linksys cannot transmit internet so i have to connect the wire directly from MODEM. there were two types of images the blue page is from linksys router connected to modem. And black page is modem which is directly connected to pc.
I did same as you told to put the ip and choose automatic config but then i could not access the page of linksys router ..i tried diff addresses but in vain...SO what do u suggest

What is the IP address that your computer receives when you connect to your modem?
If it is 192.168.1.x then follow the below steps
1) Disconnect the linksys router from the modem.
2) Connect the computer to the router. Access the setup page and change the router IP to 192.168.2.1.
3) Save the changes(U will loose access to the setup page, thats normal).
4) Again access the setup page using the new IP(192.168.2.1)
5) Now connect the Modem cable to WAN port of the router.
6) Select automatic configuration and check the status page.(If you get an IP address 192.168.1.x then the issue is resolved)

well thanks alot for your help.... infact when i connect to modem directly then i have to manually put IP and DNS and when i connect to router, ( Plug the cable of modem into main port of linksys router and another cable to PC) I cannot access internet ( already told ).
I followed all the steps as you told me and i got following snapshots for you to check briefly. i changed the ip address to 192.168.2.1 and select auto but i could not find anything in the status page.
Now i think i cannot get the ip in status page. well i am a noob but when i check ip i use this command ipconfig. I will still insist to ask may there is something which needs to be restarted at ISP ???

The only thing that I can think off is to assign the same static IP that you configured on your computer when you were connected to modem.
Select the configuration option as "Static IP address" then assign the IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS values.
(Those details that were used when we you were connected to Modem)

Get the port numbers from sony that needs to be opened. We can open those ports in the Port Triggering tab in the setup page which will be available under Application/Access Restriction.

I have an issue with my linksys.. any suggestions..
1. Ping from router to all hosts (wired and wireless) works fine
2. Ping from wired to all hosts (wired and wireless) works fine
3. All wireless hosts can reach Internet (IP & DNS)
Problem is that the wireless hosts cannot ping each other.
Subnet mask is 24 and using the default 192.168.0.0 network
Running the latest version of the code and based on some suggests found online.. also tried doing a factory default and reconfigure.
No MAC filters, just WPA2 with AES

Its nothing do with the router configuration. You need to enable File Sharing in your computers or try disabling the firewall in the computers.

ADSL connection with USB port wont work with Linksys router. Try to get a ADSL modem with ETHERNET PORT(RJ45)

I am having a weird problem, My Laptop using the WIFI is able to connect to FACEBOOK. and My Android Hand Phone is not able to connect FACEBOOK on the same WIFI router. Wow you really know your stuff. I have a wrt120n linksys router. It usually works ok. Once in a while I need to restart the router because it looses connection to my wireless devices. Ie. My iPad, iPod, blackberry etc. I was told to change the channel. What channel should I try? Is there a way to see if 11is better than 6?
Im running the latest firmware. Also, Should I change channel width to auto or 40? If I change to auto I can't set the standard channel. Can you tell me what are the best settings in my case?

I needed this last year when I first bought my linksys. I just plugged it in and hoped for the best. Needless to say, it is un-secured and when I asked a local tech about it he said I had to call linksys support to set it up correctly.
As it is, I guess everyone in my neighborhood within range is using my wireless internet. LOL. Do I uninstall it and re-install to get to the set up stuff?
